J.R. Baker-Flowers, Founder & Director
J.R. Baker-Flowers is the Founder & Director of The UNLEARNing Project®, LLC. She is a social transformation filmmaker and producer, social change educator and public speaker. Igniting her passion for social change through discourse, media and writing, J.R. Baker-Flowers created The UNLEARNing Project® in 2011 and thus began her exciting journey.
In 2014, J.R. Baker-Flowers produced her first documentary, "Reverend Dennis W. Wiley: A Journey Towards Inclusiveness," which tells the personal story of Dr. Reverend Dennis W. Wiley's voyage towards implementing an affirmative, inclusive and human-centered philosophy within one of the oldest African-American churches in Washington, D.C. Along with his wife, Co-Pastor Reverend Dr. Christine Y. Wiley, PhD, their mission to expand women's rights, implement inclusive practices towards the LGBTQ community and empower historically oppressed groups through humanist Christian education has significantly impacted the lives of residents within the District of Columbia.
In May 2015, J.R. Baker-Flowers received a grant from The Puffin Foundation, Ltd. to independently produce and direct “The Goddess Unbound: No BITCH Here Project©.” In August 2016, this initiative was published to address the socio-institutional crisis that she identified as the rising “culture of bitch.” With the increasing sexist and anti-womanist portrayals of women and girls in numerous media sources, “The Goddess Unbound: No BITCH Here Project’s©” mission is to 1) bring attention to the pervasive usage of the term “bitch” in sociocultural spaces, films, television programs and social media forums, 2) educate groups and communities on the historical evolution of the word “bitch,” as well as deconstruct the definitions of term and highlight the deeply-rooted patriarchal foundation of “reappropriating” “bitch,” and 3) spark sustainable transformation across collective mass media sources to abolish the usage and mass production of the word “bitch.”
In 2017, J.R. Baker-Flowers authored her first book, "BREAKING BITCH: Dismantling the LIES to Reclaim Your TRUTH," published in 2018, to further analyze and deconstruct the intersecting sociopolitical, capitalist, economic, and industrial media mechanisms that have engineered, as well as maintains and profits from the sociocultural and sexist malady that is the “culture of bitch.” Additionally, J.R. Baker-Flowers published this book to empower readers through the provision of introspective-mindfulness activities designed to support the reader’s journey towards healing internalized subjugated identities, which includes abolishing their usage of the word “bitch,” as well as other patriarchal verbiage and alternatively, embrace affirmative terminology and labels towards themselves, women and humanity.
In 2019, J.R. Baker-Flowers became the Creator, Executive Producer and Host of the outstanding and thought-provoking web series “Breaking Bitch TV.” J.R. Baker-Flowers courageously addresses the complexities of the word "bitch" and the intersecting issues of power, rape culture, capitalist sexism, social equity and mental health by harnessing the power of conversation and discourse with a diverse panel of special guests.
In 2020, J.R. Baker-Flowers created “Community Conversations: A Call to Action,” a weekly web series designed to address the ongoing racism, xenophobia, police brutality and economic oppression flourishing throughout the United States and globally during the confluence of the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and Institutional Racism. Throughout June and July 2020, J.R. Baker-Flowers hosted a series of livestream discussions on the "Community Conversations: A Call to Action" platform, inviting special guests to address critical topics including “Racism as a Health Pandemic,” “Pros & Cons of Protesting for Black Liberation and Justice,” “The Importance of White Allyship in Undoing Racism” and a series on “The Forgotten Ones,” addressing Anti-Black Womanism and Anti-Justice for Black Trans Victims. As a result, J.R. Baker-Flowers was awarded the Facebook Small Business Grant for Black-owned Businesses as the Founder & Director of The UNLEARNing Project LLC.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, J.R. Baker-Flowers received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology in 2005 from Clark Atlanta University. After managing a federally funded youth educational and health-driven program serving socioeconomically marginalized low-income K-12 youth in Atlanta, Georgia, J.R. Baker-Flowers received the Leadership in Community Development Fellowship from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2007 and received a Master’s of Arts in Community Development and Planning in 2009. Between 2009-2023, J.R. Baker-Flowers has had a progressive career in managing federally funded citywide and statewide public health inclusion intervention programs in Washington, D.C. and the Pacific Northwest, and has had a flourishing background as a DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Training, Organizational Change Management, and Outreach specialist supporting early learning and K-12 schools, healthcare clinics, nonprofits, community-based organizations, local public health authorities, national youth camp alliances, churches, and private corporations. In 2023, J.R. Baker-Flowers received her Professional Certification in Inclusive Leadership and will soon receive a Professional Certificate in Organizational Leadership in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
